Fixed Fan

Displayed is a sweet grass, wood-splint fan. The fan was found in between walls during a renovation in 1990 at 36 St. Mary's street, Antigonish. The home was built in 1878. The hand-held fan was used as a way of cooling oneself. The Mi'kmaq crafts people produced many decorative and novelty pieces such as this fan, which were goods to be sold. This fan is a rare piece but sources have found a few similiar existing pieces. There is a fan at a museum in Philadelpha, a miniature fan at the Smithsoniam, and there is a photo of one in archives in Prince Edward Island.
